I am especially interested in Scanmaker compatibility with 3rd party SCSI cards. The more information you can provide, the more useful this database will be to other users.

| I have intermittent success punctuated by obscene
lockups. I can recover from the lockups by power cycling the scanner.
The scanner releases the SCSI bus after the LED quits blinking in its
power-on self test. I have updated to ScanWizard 2.42, updated all drivers,
bios, firmware, tried new, short 3' cables, active terminators, all with limited
success at eradicating the intermittent failures. Per Microtek's web
site, I have disabled disconnection, and set BT-948 to only attempt
asynchronous connections with the E6. Anyone else with an ultra-scsi device having solid success with the E6 on a 3rd party card?

| I connected the scanner to my SCSI bus which at that time had the Mac, an external HD, a CD-ROM, a zip drive and the scanner. All the devices were set to unique addresses. My Mac failed to boot so I reduced the bus to just the Mac, the ext HD and the E6. The Mac booted and I was scanning 20 minutes after I opened the E6 box. I need to go back and verify that the SCSI addresses are unique and find out if cables or termination could be the problem or even the CD-ROM which has given me problems before but I'm content to be scanning for right now. | |||||||

| I had a difficult time installing a Microtek v310 on my Pentium 133 which also has a Canon BJC-4304 attached to the shared parallel port. After several calls to Microtek tech support, I was finally able to get it working using some workarounds with the installation program which would not install it properly. I'm pleased with the scanner'soperation but I still have one problem I can't solve.Whenever I restart WIN95, it stops during its loading for about 4 minutes during which time the printer starts and stops and beeps several times. After 4 minutes, WIN95 continues loading and Device Manager shows the scanner and SCSI working properly. Also both the scanner and printer seem to work fine. The delay, of course, is annoying and indicates a problem with the Microtek Parallel Port Adapter and my printer. Previously, the printer worked fine and WIN95 loaded normally. Now the printer still works but the WIN95 loading delay and trauma to the printer continues.Microtek tech support could not provide any suggestions other than adding /u /v /n /sf=10 to the driver settings. I assume this is equivalent to what Swissknife does when using its driver setting window. Unfortunately, there is no help information on what thesedriver settings do and how they should be used.Posting this on a scanner newsgroup resulted in a reply from another use with the exact same problem except that his boot delay is 6 minues. | |||||||

| I've got two E3's. One at home under Win95 and another one at work under NT4. Both of them use the included Adaptec 1502AE SCSI card. I'm pleased with the scanner, but I have experienced several (3-5) lockups in Scanwizard in the middle of scans. Usually a reboot is necessary after the lockup. I haven't had any problems with my NT4 installation. My main complaint is with Scanwizard not having a minimize button, and with it taking up 100% of the processor when previewing, scanning, etc. It doesn't seem to be designed to multitask, and bringing a PII-300Mhz machine to its knees for a small scan seems to be a little bit wierd. | |||||||

| I have the same problem as others reporting in this group. My E3 scanner has intermittent lockups when using scanwizard. I can sometimes (usually) get two scans but then lockup. Only problem is with scanwizard. Never locks up during the actual scan or preview but randomly when changing settings or mask etc. I have tried disabling disconnect and sync data transfer with no improvement. I have not loaded EZ-scsi 4 but sparrow.mvd is latest. Am connected to the scsi card with the 3ft cable supplied. Passive terminator (I think). When HP Sure Shot tape6000 added I use a 6ft cable. Combination works exactly the same. Tape works perfectly. Have sent a detailed message to Microtek re: this problem but no response. If anybody would like to see it I will be glad to share it with you. | |||||||

| My Microtek Phantom 4800EPP (=310 in the U.S. ?)runs nicely under Win95 on a Pentium 200. But with the Pentium II 266MHz/ASUS P2L97 AGP, the install program somehow messes up the Win95 configuration. The boot process stops in the last DOS window before the final Win95 screen. Several times, I have had to reinstall Win 95 ( v. 4.00.950B). Downloading and installing v. 2.41 of Microtek's scanner software didn't solve the problem. A reply from Microtek Europe quoted Microtek Taiwan regarding EPP problems, indicating that this was something they "heard a lot about now". The last suggestion from Microtek was this: "I am sorry about your client and your situation, please try the following solutions: a) replace the system's WNASPI32.DLL and APIX.VXD files (in windows/system directory) with Microsoft Windows' original ones (you may have to copy these two files from your PC for him) b) to rename the Microtek file MIISD.VXD in c:\windows\twain_32\scanwiz directory to something else and restart the computer. After that it should work OK. | ||||||

| I was unable to install the new Microtek V600 scanner on my Parallel Port, even when it was the only thing on the port. This scanner uses the parallel port but it has a SCSI ID. Everything seemed to be fine, including the correct entries in the Device Manager. The installation got through the Swiss Knife tests. When the Scanner Test was done, it would get Scanner not Ready. I am using the Photexpress software that came with the scanner. I have an intermittent problem in that the scanner will scan a certain portion of the picture correctly, then will just have colored streaks for the rest of the scan. After a few tries, I can get it to scan a whole picture, but 2/3 scans streak for me. I think the scanner is on the noisy side compared to other scanners I have heard, a comment made by several V310 owners. Any suggestion as to how to solve the problem of streaking? | I installed a ScanMaker V310...on the 1st install it caused a system wide failure...in which I had to reboot in safe mode. I eventually reinstalled the Microtek software which included the ScanMaker, ulead iphoto express, and kai. It is working great SO FAR...I haven't used it enough to tell you whether I'm TOTALLY pleased with it YET...but it is working great at the moment. I decided with a parallel port because I was a bit fearful with messing my comp with a SCSI card...so that made my decision easier to make. I use the pass through printer port for my epson stylus 600...my scanner has to be on constantly for the printer to be used. Just wondering for the future...can the "bulb" on my scanner be replaced....and if so...what's the cost at this point...thanks for any info! vivek | ||||||

| I finally got my E6 installed and did the scanner test successfully. I already have an Adaptec AHA 2930 SCSI card on IRQ 10. I first tried to install the 1502AE Adaptec card on IRQ 11. No conflicts were indicated, but the windows installation always hung up on the finish. In the device manager everything looked good, including the proper IRQ. The card was present in the SCSI devices, but when I rebooted the system would hang getting into windows. I had to come up in safe mode and delete the 1502AE entry under device manager SCSI. Then everything would work except the scanner. Finally I took the card out again and changed the IRQ to 12. Then it went through the installation successfully, and the scanner seems to be working. | ||||||

| I used my E6 last night on the BT-948. The gods must be smiling. I did not have a single lockup--everything worked beautifully from an 8.5x13" scan to several 4x6 photos. The scanner has been working solidly on the BT-948 since I last hooked it up. I am now suspecting that either voodoo, card seating, or cable angles may have something to do with previous bouts of intermittent lockups. The BT-948 is an ultra-scsi card. The scanner shares the bus with an ultra-scsi HD and a SCSI-2 TR-4 tape drive. Internal bus is 3', external 4'. Both ends actively terminated. | ||||||

| Installation of my E6 & supplied SCSI card & supplied terminator was uneventful, couldn't have been easier. Default resources (irq=10 & i/o=140h) set on the card were free on my system and installed perfectly. Supplied software installed from the CD without a hitch. No after install problems. Scanner worked just great from scan #1. On day #3 I did get a message saying that the Monitor was unknown which I fixed by reselecting the monitor in Display Properties. I had not seen this message before installing the scanner so I thought it might be related. On Day#4 I upgraded to ScanWizard 2.42 and I haven't seen that error message since. My system: Dell XPS D300, 64MB. This scanner is the only scsi device. OSR2.1 with all the latest updates installed. It did *not* ask for my Win95 CD during the install as some others have reportedly experienced. Maybe this is because I use OSR2.1, or maybe it's because I have installed all the lastest OSR2.1 updates. | ||||||

I bought the "Enhanced Diagnostic Terminator" at the local Computer City. It costs $50 and has a lot of leds that might aid in trouble-shooting problems. | I attempted to install an E3+ (parallel) on both my Pentium and 486 machines. Bear in mind that these machines are very different. Software installation on my Pentium would not complete properly. System would consistently freeze up during device driver update. After (finally) getting the software installed without exclamations under the Win95 control panel, would get consistent "Timeout Error - -1004" while attempting to scan. Attempting to install the scanner on the 486 generated the VERY SAME PROBLEM! Exchanged scanner for another E3+. Identical symptoms. Blew me away! Was unable to determine the cause of the problem after many hours playing with smplscsi settings, IRQ's, etc., etc. Returned the scanner and regained sanity. One comment: The generally shoddy workmanship of the scanner driver support (spelling errors, poor design, unbelievably horrid documentation, etc.) leads me to suspect that the E3+ was a rush job. This is too bad, because the E3 (NOT the E3+) was a great unit. But, as they say, as soon as something great comes along, they stop making it!

Is there a difference on scsi-signalling or speed between scaning and preview ? the installation description i got from Microtec told just to change the scsi-options for the scanner-device does anybody have an idea what is realy going on in that case ? it makes no sence to have very fast HD´s by slowing down the controller to 50%.....

| Thursday, March 5, 1998 - 11:45:59 pm | Our ScanMaker 35t Plus (ordered from www.insight.com, 1/98) broke down after 2 sessions of 2 hours of usage. First the motor moving the slide carriage malfunctioned, then the lamp went out a few minutes later -- some critical part had failed. After that, the motor would no longer perform as before and the lamp didn't turn on; the ready light also never turned on again. We called Microtek Tech Support and they gave us an RMA number. They received the defective film scanner on 18-Feb-1998, and we received a presumably working product 2-Mar-1998, total 12 day processing time. | |||||

| Friday, March 6, 1998 - 04:01:15 pm | Hi world, Hi hodd, Up to yesterday my PC worked fine with an Adaptec 1502 card and Microtek's Scanmaker E6. Then a new SCSI harddisk (IBM DPES 31080) together with an Adaptec AHA-1542CP arrived from the office (they wanted to trash them!). Remove the 1502, installed the 1542CP, terminated the harddisk, installed it, everything was just fine, disk was recognized. Then I wanted to plug-in the scanner, but hey... the cable didn't fit into the AHA 1542CP. Went to my local computer store, bought a new cable (DSUB 50 HP - Centr. 50 SP says it on the package), plugged it in and ... - the Adaptec timed out during the boot process. So: Looked around the Internet and found out that I had to terminate the scanner. Unfortunately, the new cable had no terminator. Went again to the store, bought a 50 pins Centronics, passive inline terminator. Plugged it in between the scanner and the cable. Booted and hey... the scanner was recognized. Me lucky! Started Windows 95, the scanner was again recognized. Just for sure, installed the newest version of ScanWizard 2.44. Tested the scanner with Microtek's ScannerTest. First impression: Connecting takes longer than before. - Wanted to see what PaintShopPro does... Selected the 32 bit twain version for aquiring in PaintShopPro. Then tried to acquire a new scan: ScanWizard started. Preview took 26 seconds (hand-stopped!) until the scanner started to scan. Prescan was OK. Then wanted to scan the pic eventually, but after about 200 seconds of waiting for something to happen: nothing happened. Had to terminate PaintShopPro. This is reproducable! The connecting process with ScannerTest takes much longer. PaintShopPro refuses to scan but prescans delayed but OK. Any ideas about what is happening here? My system: Win95, Asus P55T2P24, 96 MB, SCSI: IBM DPES 31080 (ID:0) - Adaptec AHA-1542CP (ID:7) - Scanmaker E6 (ID:6), 1 EIDE harddisk, Seagate Streamer 3200, CD Mitsumi FX-800, Matrox Mystique, Soundblaster 32, NE2000 network card. | Sunday, March 8, 1998 - 07:57:42 pm | Trying to use my new E3 Plus has been a disaster. Up most of the last 20 hrs struggling with it (probably would have been up anyway since we have a newborn boy in the house, its his pix I want to scan...) Trying to Use it on a Thinkpad 560 (P 133/ 24M RAM), which has 2 PCMCIA cards, one of which is used to connect an external Panasonic CD-ROM. Got one decent scan out of the package, then the whole thing has crashed continuously. Intially, I could still preview, but scans would produce 1/5 of the image, rest colored streaks. then it stopped even doing that, and freezes at the scan test in Scanwizard. Windows error message usually includes reference to smplscsy. Many times, it freezes the whole laptop. I've reinstalled Scanwizard, tried setting my parallel port to ECP etc. (Though I don't know how to set the channels when I do that, seems to default to DMA 3.) Checked out the crappy & cheap Microtek site. Nothing works! I plan on sending the whole damn unit back, unless someone can suggest a new solution such as one of the undocumented "software switches" I've seen mentioned in some postings. Thanks for your help, and Microtek buyers beware! | |||||

| Monday, March 9, 1998 - 12:24:16 am | After tests with at least 15 different cables and 5 different Terminators (aktive and passive scsi-1 and 2) i found some differences in results of previewing. Sometimes it was working. Maybe there are some problems on the bus because i am using 2 ST32550WC Barracuda with SCA-Adapters and a 32-Toshiba CDROM. Additionaly i connect sometimes a DEC DLT4000 Tapedrive. Just for testing i changed the Terminator who is attached on the Scanner (pass-trough terminator) with a SCSII-Sniffer with some funny LED´s on it. (Dont realy know the meaning off all LED`s) and now everything is working without any problems at all. I am not shure if the sniffer is just the right terminator or if it is sorting out some real problems on the bus. Only thing i found is a big difference between Scanning and Previewing. The LED´s are reacting very different. But anyway, now it is working. This SNIFFER-THING is a T210TT which i have bought from EFB-Electronik. The Manufactures-Name could be SCSI-SENSE but i am not shure about it. Last thing i wot to say is that i am glad to get some help through this forum while i got no help from Microtec at all. Someone said: "It´s a great scanner with a realy bad support." sorry, but i have to say thats true. Thanks to Todd who gave me a tipp in the right direction. /Wolfgang | |||||

| Tuesday, March 10, 1998 - 12:53:38 am | After Installation of the SCSI-Sniffer i thought everything is working but is is not. I am realy tired about this Scanner-SW. It seems that it is not possible to change the scan-type from "Millions of colores" to "line" ore "256 Grayscale" without having the same problems as i had before. The scsi-bus hangs and Winnt40 breaks down with the well known message on blue screen "IRQL_NOT LESS OR EQUAL" AIC78xx ect. If i change back everything to 300 dpi and color it works. If i install everything new and scan the first job in B/W it works with B/W until i change to color. So every change i do will cause the scanner-sw to pull down the scsi-bus. I am out of ideas what i can test to figure out what is going on. From Microtec i get no answers at all. | Saturday, March 14, 1998 - 09:34:17 am | I just recently built a new P300 system with an Asus SC875 PCI UltraWide SCSI card. Internally there is an UltraSCSI Plextor UltraPlex CD-ROM. That setup worked fine, so I decided to try connecting my Microtek E-3. This E-3 was purchased as the "parallel-to-SCSI" version and was being used as such on a previous Cyrix PC. Anyway I took out the parallel-to-SCSI cable and bought a cable with a 50-pin centronics end for the scanner side and a DB68-pin end for the external UW connector on my Asus card. Also I placed Microtek's included terminator on the 50-pin end of the cable. Cable is 6 feet long (I don't plan on adding additional external SCSI devices). Booted up, installed ScanWizard, worked like a charm. No problems at all. Microtek scanner is set to ID #5, UltraPlex is ID #3. This system is actually running Windows 98 RC0, and all devices are being run by the drivers that Win98 installed itself upon installation. None of the drivers included on manufacturer's disks were used. cheers Aaron (aaron@pobox.com) | |||||

| Tuesday, March 24, 1998 - 07:05:54 pm | My old Scanmaker II was incompatible with NT, I have a Scanmaker E3 Plus which is stated to be NT-compatible and connects through the parallel port, with the printer. I have done all the installation as instructed and the computer cannot detect a scanner in the system. I called Microtek this morning and on their advice downloaded the latest upgraded version of ScanWizard (2.44) and the EPP driver (?) epp263.exe and installed them and still get the same error messages. The scanner test routine tells me: "No parallel port host adapters found. Please ensure the device is powered up and connected properly", and "No scanner devices connected..." On rebooting the system, I get the message: " At least one service or driver failed during system setup. Use Event Viewer ...etc" The Event Viewer log tells me "The following boot-start or system start drivers failed to load: SMPLSCSI" In Settings, Control Panel, SCSI adapters, the driver is listed as "Microtek SMPLSCSI Driver installed (not started)." The printer works when connected throught the scanner. Parallel port is set to EPP. The Microtek rep said if the new drivers don't solve it, the next thing to check is hardware. Possibly a faulty cable, even a faulty scanner. If none of those things work, he had no other ideas. AARRRRRGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! | |||||

Because I only had 1 isa-slot and 1 IRQ left, I feared that I could run into trouble, but everything was installed within half an hour. I'm using the cable that came with the scanner. The only remarks that I have to make is that the scanner is rather noisy and I would like to use the twain-driver without having the popup-screens from the scanwizard. I'm using Papermaster that came with the scanner and this program should be able to use it's own scanner-settings screen, but I get a message saying it can't disable scanwizard's interface. Probably ignorant faults on my side, because it was the first time I installed a scanner (and SCSI interface card). The card is recognized by win95, but defaults to IRQ 12, which you have to replace with 10, because the Adaptec 1505 is defaulted at 10. Some weird things happened, as the interface card didn't work correctly the first couple of times I installed it. A yellow exclamation mark, but no conflicts whatsoever .. I messed around with the settings for awhile and hard rebooted a couple of times, and every time i would get a different error message. Also, remember to install Scanwizard first before connecting the scanner to the SCSI card (I forgot!). It now works .. and I'm perfectly happy with it. Regards, Lok

I would not say that installation was painless for several reasons: - first my Windows 95 system crashed during the installation; I will not blame Microtek on that one but may be a combination of Bill and Microtek, - documentation is far from obvious; installation of the SCSI card was painful since I had about 3 different ways of jumper configuration according to the documentation I received, I had to look at where the tracks were going on the bus connector. After reloading Windows and sorting that jumper problem, the scanner is working as expected, I have not had much time to use it but so far so good. However after approximately 10 scans I encounter problems with errors in colour balance. These seem random at first, the odd pink scan or lime green tint. As I take further scans other problems arise the motor driving the slide carrier seems to falter or chatter. At this point the problems seem to compound until the computer locks up. | Wednesday, July 8, 1998 - 08:40:47 am | I tried a Buslogic BT-946C. I understand it is a BT-948 predecessor. It is a PCI Fast SCSI2 card. It's maximum transfer rate is 10MB/sec as opposed to 20MB/sec for the BT-948. It also doesn't have the BIOS to boot a CD-ROM. I became interested in the Buslogic BT-946C, because Wayne Fulton on his http://www.cyberramp.net/~fulton/scans.html page says he used the BT-946C to connect a Microtek E3 scanner and he didn't have any problems. I connected the BT-946C to my E6 scanner using the same 4 foot cable I had used unsuccessfully with my Adaptec 2930 card. I used the same Passive Passthru terminator that came with the Microtek E6. Over the last two days I have done more than my usual amount of scanning of various size pictures and documents. With the BT-946C I have not had a single hang or timeout. That's even a better record than I had with the Adaptec AVA 1502AE, which would hang occasionally during a scan. So far the scanner is all I have on the BT-946C. I have an IDE Harddrive and have the CD-ROMS on the Adaptec 2930. I can boot a CD-ROM on the 2930. Since the BT-946C is a PCI card, the mouse is also free during the scan, although it doesn't seem to scan any faster. I tried starting some other things during a scan. Still no hangs or timeouts. The BT-946C cost $90, which may be a little expensive to prevent a few hangups and let the mouse move, but I do have a free ISA slot now, and I have two SCSI controllers in my system.

Does anyone know how to shift a MS Intelimouse to IRQ 5 or have devices share and IRQ? I have also heard that I can hook up with a Parallel to SCSI cable (EPP)on my printer port. Has anyone tried this? Is the scanner slower or about the same? Does the scanner (or other devices) have to be designed for USB or can I get a adapter plug and plug in my scanner or other devices? I have had my scanner for over 6 months and have not done a dozen scans. How can I hook my scanner to my PC????

| Tuesday, August 4, 1998 - 05:45:41 pm | Computer hangs after 1/2 years use. Using a 60 MHz Pentium Win95 with 2 IDE disks, Adaptec 1502E and E3 scanner without problems for about half a year. Suddenly getting all kinds of problems booting. BOOTLOG.TXT indicating it coudn't find the fonts! I blamed it on a disk crash (worked OK with 1 disk only). Bought myself a new 400 MHz DELL PentiumII Win98. Works brilliant until installing SCSI card + scanner. Exactly the same error in BOOTLOG.TXT !!!! How can the ISA scsi corrupt the IDE/PCI discs? Hardware error on 1502E card ? Where can I buy a new one (seems that SCSI cards costs twice what I paid for the scanner and that included a SCSI card)? Can I buy a cable and use the printer port in staed with the same E3 (have 3 connectors)? Any help appreciated. Regards / Mr Bear | |||||

| Thursday, September 3, 1998 - 03:07:57 am | First e6 i got arrived dead, the company i ordered from replaced it promptly with appologies. the second one has worked for about a year, now the thing starts up, buzzes a bit, blinks a bit, then the ready light goes out and it never becomes ready for scanning. Upon looking closer into the problem, i shined a bright light into it and the scanner ready light comes on and does its normal pass through the scan path as usual. I have not tested it to scan yet, i am too tired after spending 4 hours on this problem. I think the bulb is burned out even though it comes on, perhaps it has 2 levels or something and the second level is burned out. I am currently trying to find a source for bulb replacement. the part number in the scanner is: FL8AD-70 8watt, however i have seen reference to a Philips 8WTL84 but in reviewing their site, it looks like the correct model number might be: LT8W84 but i have no definate answers or sources for this. Any info would be helpful, please email me with a solution. | |||||

This was using an EPP driver, which co-exists with an HP Laserjet 6 printer. The SMPLSCSI driver refused to load at startup. I have used the latest ScanWizard software from the microtek website. My second attempt was to try to get this to work on my Mac. Internal SCSI port has same 25 pin connector. | Sunday, April 25, 1999 - 07:53:30 am | First time installation under Win95/OSR2 worked fine with beautiful scans. After reboot the scanner was no longer seen with an error message of "No Host Adapters Found". Since then I have tried everything I can think of including setting Parallel Port in BIOS to ECP/EPP, ECP and EPP/SPP (I think it was set to just SPP the first time I installed it). Also tried all permutations of boot sequences (scanner->printer->PC, scanner->PC->printer, etc.) Also tried all possible options without printer attached (using an Epson Color Stylus600). Tried complete reformat and reinstall of Win95 to no avail. Have since "graded" to Win98 (still not sure whether the use of the prefix "up-" is warranted). This didn't resolve anything either. Tried using Microtek Support Web Site's suggested Win98 driver switches (you know, the "/n /v /sf=30" options) but this didn't work either. Began to suspect the cable. Took cable back to Micro Center but they don't carry replacements (!). I asked them if they could test my cable while I was there so I could rule it out. First two sales reps said I'd have to contact Microtek because Micro Center doesn't have any scanners to test it with (!?). Third rep hooked me up with a comparable cable and Centronics->DB25 adapter so I could test the "bad cable" theory. Same results. Seems to me like everyone involved from the manufacturer to the retailer is unable to effectively support this device. By the way I noticed that Micro Center no longer carries any Microtek Parallel Port scanners and is only offering USB models and a couple that use SCSI cards. One of the new Microtek USB models was only $49 after a $30 mail-in rebate (my V310 was $79 with no rebates offered just a few months ago). What's the old saying?: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." I think I'll be trying one of the UMAX models next, thanks to Microtek's poor online support. I've been using an E6 and a BT-948 for a while, and had few problems. Yeh, Microtek's software sucks. Thing I hate is how the Microtek twain driver (in Photoshop 4) has to be reloaded for and killed after every scan. Hey Microtek: heard of multitasking? I keep the scanner off mostly, only turn it on when going to do scans. How to reconnect without reboot: Right click on 'My Computer' (Bill's Computer?) --> Properties. Device manager tab --> Computer. Select 'View Devices by connection. 'Refresh' (takes several seconds) If new dev not visible, expand 'SCSI card'. As for the stupid toy SCSI card that came with the scanner: bin it. No internal SCSI header, indeed! Would have helped if Microtek had documented what the pinouts of the D connector on the back of the E6 was. OK, so eventually I found out it was a Mac SCSI 'standard', but not having a Mac... I had to wire up a cable, just to loop the SCSI on to the external hard disks box. I found this site while searching for info on why my Philips SCSI CD burner (CDD2000) has just stopped working (in Win95 only - still OK in DOS and Win 3.1 !!!???) Sigh. Computers. | Sunday, April 7, 2002 - 12:51:21 pm | No end of problems.....driver version 2.6 is supposed to support Windows 2000 - and it doesnt. I have been trying all day - approximatey 7 hours now - getting a tad fed up. Device Manager displays Microtek SimpleSCSI Miniport Drivers flagged with a yellow ! (warning) - on reading the information it tells me that there is no driver installed, or one is not required - clearly one is required! I can run the scan test successfully, the image is displayed in the small black box - on loading the ScanSuite software, or Word 2000 or any app I guess, I get the following error : Error 4001 - no drivers found for this device (presumably something to do with the yellow warning under device manager).. Spec : Windows 2000, Service Pack2, Pentium 2 333mhz, 160 ram, fresh install (the day before) excessive HD space - Scanner = Microtek Phantom C6 (seems to display as V600? Quite confusing in itself) I have emailed Microtek but expect to get no reply or a 'no help' reply based on the age of the scanner - *sigh*

| Friday, May 31, 2002 - 06:10:54 am | W2K inbuilt driver worked OK with ScanWizard 2.60 so tried XP. XP will NOT auto detect non-PNP ISA cards so I just manually set IRQ 10 and 140H (Forced Hardware in XP). Once this was done on reboot XP detected the new hardware and then identified the Scanmaker E6. Funny thing is it saw it 8 times and installed 8 iterations of Scanmaker E6. Anyway the TWAIN worked fine with XP's inbuilt TWAIN driver(and PSP 6.02) but when ScanWizard 2.60 was tried it didn't work. As the scanner was starting the preview the app went into 'not responding' and can't be killed off with Task Manager. So almost there! | |||||

| Sunday, June 9, 2002 - 01:12:08 am | OK, got the problem with ScanWizard 2.60 on XP. I had to disable the extra ScanMaker E6 entries installed in the Device Manager and ScanWizard is happy. Unable to uninstall the extra entries as XP will just re-install them on the next reboot. Also strange - the ScanWizard 2.60 identifies as 2.60 in the app and the downloadable file name but the TWAIN shows 2.54 so either an internal version number was not updated or the currently posted 260 file is not what it seems. | |||||

| Saturday, June 15, 2002 - 09:12:34 am | Hi...ever since installation of a new scanner ( with twain drivers) ALL of my PS [rograms freeze on intializing...PS7 even yeilds a twain re-install recommendation error. Please reply if you have hyad this problem or have an idea.. But do know that i have 1. deleted and re-installed PS with and without the scanner and drivers...(using registry crawler to clean out any traces0 2. have re- named all the twin twinker files. Have re-installed Windows OS OVER the old version. 3. have spoken to Canoscan tech support ot make certain I have no remaining dlls or anything... 4. have scoured Adobe for twain/thunker window problems and they only refer to probs IMPORTING images into PS from a twin scanner (I assume PS can initialize for this). 5. I have removed all prOGRAMS associated with the scanner (omnipro and photoscan) both of which work FINE with the scanned images...although PS was an option to import scanned stuff into it never worked..It froze. Last bit of info I have is each time I try to run PS 4 files are thrown into the Win temp dir.. 3 .mtx twain files and a twain log that basically says it cann't find the twunker window??!! I had a TWAIN_32 folder in Windows that only have one version of the twain driver...did i mention that I tried the latest canon driver als well...? and the Canoscan exe stuff. That folder is now deleted, (It was recommended by canon) as it will recreate when another twain scnner or camera is installed. I don't know what else to do aside from re-installing to another os ALTOGETHER or putting PS on another 'pter altogether...oh, yeah I don't HAVE another computer...:0D. I am using Me right now...and tho it has a bad rep I don't mind it. I don't want to have to burn 20 gb of info to disc so i can reinstall the os. O yeah, one last thing... ALL versions of PS: 5.5-7 worked FINE before the scanner was installed...and there have been no other software installations or hardware installed that it could be. Help!! I MISS Photoshop!!! Scuba22 aka Michele followup: well, guys..I sooooo appreciate the help... I have tried everything mentioned including re-installing PS wothout any trace of TWAIn or the Scanner software. (including image programs installed with it). I also did dare :-) to clean the registry of any and everything scanner, twain, twunk AND photoshop related rebooted and re-installed everything. As far as Quarterdeck Clean sweep...I do run Norton clean sweep and have read that rec. on the Adobe site, so I disabled that too as a test: No change. The error log that gets thrown into the temp dir (along with 2 0r 3 .mtx files) reads as follows: TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk ::AppInitialize - Reset Log TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk ::OpenServer - Starting Thunker TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk ::CloseServer - Why Can't We Find The Thunker Window? TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - DSM --DsmEntryDiagExit (RC = 0, CC = 0) TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTWTRACE--Adobe Photoshop(49) to NULL: TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTWTRACE--CONTROL, IDENTITY, GETFIRST the only thing i ahve not tried...is the re-insatll of PF only the EXE files as Caligula's Adobe rec states. It seems whether the scanner is on or not PS is messed up now. I spoke to Canon tech support who referred me BACK to ADOBE...who charges for support ??!! So, I'm still trying. The bummer is: I have so much I want to do... Michele | |||||

| Saturday, June 29, 2002 - 01:16:10 pm | Actually, winxp. I have to reboot every time I want to use my scanner Phantom 330, as the scanner wasn't powered up by the system boot. This really anoys me, because my pc isn't that fast, and it takes a while to reboot. I've tried several versions of microtek's drivers. They worked, but as I turn off my scanner and switch it back on, I have to reboot. Speaking of timekilling :)!!! Can anyone tell me, why I have to reboot, and how I can fix this. Extra information: there's a yellow ! on my smplscsi port at my device manager, but also windows has installed a SCSI RAID controller, wich I don't have (I think) | |||||
