This database documents user experience with Microtek scanners. It was created to let Microtek users share their problems with and solutions to installation headaches associated with the Microtek Scanmaker flatbed scanners.

I am especially interested in Scanmaker compatibility with 3rd party SCSI cards. The more information you can provide, the more useful this database will be to other users.

Database closed to new additions March 2004.

Please be patient as the first table loads. Netscape at least wants to have the whole table before it displays any of it. I've split the database up into multiple tables by hand, and have considered a new table for every new record...but this is somewhat icky. Any html gurus who have tips on getting a single table to load quickly, fire away!

I have intermittent success punctuated by obscene lockups. I can recover from the lockups by power cycling the scanner. The scanner releases the SCSI bus after the LED quits blinking in its power-on self test. I have updated to ScanWizard 2.42, updated all drivers, bios, firmware, tried new, short 3' cables, active terminators, all with limited success at eradicating the intermittent failures. Per Microtek's web site, I have disabled disconnection, and set BT-948 to only attempt asynchronous connections with the E6.
Anyone else with an ultra-scsi device having solid success with the E6 on a 3rd party card?

In the course of 2 hours of scanning, 5 lockups occurred. After recovering win95 (either closes apps or hard reboot), Scanmaker reports no scanners found, at this point I have to power off/on E6. Adaptec bios 1.16, scanmaker 2.42, Adaptec settings Sync Disable, 5Mbps, No Enable Disc.

I connected the scanner to my SCSI bus which at that time had the Mac, an external HD, a CD-ROM, a zip drive and the scanner. All the devices were set to unique addresses. My Mac failed to boot so I reduced the bus to just the Mac, the ext HD and the E6. The Mac booted and I was scanning 20 minutes after I opened the E6 box. I need to go back and verify that the SCSI addresses are unique and find out if cables or termination could be the problem or even the CD-ROM which has given me problems before but I'm content to be scanning for right now.

Power Mac 7300/200 has problems recognizing multiple SCSI buses. As such, if the scanner is id=6 on one scsi bus, id=6 must be vacant on the other bus. Microtek promised a fix in a future upgrade.

Works great with Asus Sc200 (sym810). Other devices are (externally) Creative 4xCD-ROM, Yamaha 2x CD-R, and (internally) Seagate Barrucuda 2gig. Scanner felt fasterwith SC200 perhaps because the transfer rate is higher between scanner and SCSI card.Never crashed once.

I had a difficult time installing a Microtek v310 on my Pentium 133 which also has a Canon BJC-4304 attached to the shared parallel port. After several calls to Microtek tech support, I was finally able to get it working using some workarounds with the installation program which would not install it properly. I'm pleased with the scanner'soperation but I still have one problem I can't solve.Whenever I restart WIN95, it stops during its loading for about 4 minutes during which time the printer starts and stops and beeps several times. After 4 minutes, WIN95 continues loading and Device Manager shows the scanner and SCSI working properly. Also both the scanner and printer seem to work fine. The delay, of course, is annoying and indicates a problem with the Microtek Parallel Port Adapter and my printer. Previously, the printer worked fine and WIN95 loaded normally. Now the printer still works but the WIN95 loading delay and trauma to the printer continues.Microtek tech support could not provide any suggestions other than adding /u /v /n /sf=10 to the driver settings. I assume this is equivalent to what Swissknife does when using its driver setting window. Unfortunately, there is no help information on what thesedriver settings do and how they should be used.Posting this on a scanner newsgroup resulted in a reply from another use with the exact same problem except that his boot delay is 6 minues.

No problems, but I knew from experience to NEVER mess about with non-Adaptec SCSI cards. Whether the SCSI card in question is really at fault or not, you always know that the peripheral maker has done compatibility testing with Adaptec. They can't use the excuse 'well it works with an Adaptec card' when you call for support.

I've got two E3's. One at home under Win95 and another one at work under NT4. Both of them use the included Adaptec 1502AE SCSI card. I'm pleased with the scanner, but I have experienced several (3-5) lockups in Scanwizard in the middle of scans. Usually a reboot is necessary after the lockup. I haven't had any problems with my NT4 installation. My main complaint is with Scanwizard not having a minimize button, and with it taking up 100% of the processor when previewing, scanning, etc. It doesn't seem to be designed to multitask, and bringing a PII-300Mhz machine to its knees for a small scan seems to be a little bit wierd.

I have the same problem as others reporting in this group. My E3 scanner has intermittent lockups when using scanwizard. I can sometimes (usually) get two scans but then lockup. Only problem is with scanwizard. Never locks up during the actual scan or preview but randomly when changing settings or mask etc. I have tried disabling disconnect and sync data transfer with no improvement. I have not loaded EZ-scsi 4 but sparrow.mvd is latest. Am connected to the scsi card with the 3ft cable supplied. Passive terminator (I think). When HP Sure Shot tape6000 added I use a 6ft cable. Combination works exactly the same. Tape works perfectly. Have sent a detailed message to Microtek re: this problem but no response. If anybody would like to see it I will be glad to share it with you.

My Microtek Phantom 4800EPP (=310 in the U.S. ?)runs nicely under Win95 on a Pentium 200. But with the Pentium II 266MHz/ASUS P2L97 AGP, the install program somehow messes up the Win95 configuration. The boot process stops in the last DOS window before the final Win95 screen. Several times, I have had to reinstall Win 95 ( v. 4.00.950B). Downloading and installing v. 2.41 of Microtek's scanner software didn't solve the problem. A reply from Microtek Europe quoted Microtek Taiwan regarding EPP problems, indicating that this was something they "heard a lot about now". The last suggestion from Microtek was this: "I am sorry about your client and your situation, please try the following solutions: a) replace the system's WNASPI32.DLL and APIX.VXD files (in windows/system directory) with Microsoft Windows' original ones (you may have to copy these two files from your PC for him) b) to rename the Microtek file MIISD.VXD in c:\windows\twain_32\scanwiz directory to something else and restart the computer. After that it should work OK.

I was unable to install the new Microtek V600 scanner on my Parallel Port, even when it was the only thing on the port. This scanner uses the parallel port but it has a SCSI ID. Everything seemed to be fine, including the correct entries in the Device Manager. The installation got through the Swiss Knife tests. When the Scanner Test was done, it would get Scanner not Ready. I was on the phone with Microtek for two hours. They decided the unit was defective, wo I returned it to NECX and have just ordered the E6 as a replacement.

After finding a set of undocumented switches in searching a newgroup archive, I finally got the scanner to work. I am using the parallel port version in EPP mode. I am using the Photexpress software that came with the scanner. I have an intermittent problem in that the scanner will scan a certain portion of the picture correctly, then will just have colored streaks for the rest of the scan. After a few tries, I can get it to scan a whole picture, but 2/3 scans streak for me. I think the scanner is on the noisy side compared to other scanners I have heard, a comment made by several V310 owners. Any suggestion as to how to solve the problem of streaking? (BTW, I have a BJC 610 printer, but I have it disconnected completely and still have the same problem...)

My scanner always gets probed as an ADPTScanner? What is that?? Scans greater than 300dpi with the 32bit ScanWizzard fail with comm errors. It turns out that I had installed Adaptec EZ-SCSI 4.? which put three files in my windows/inf directory (scsiscanner, scscicdr, scsitape). If I delete the scsiscanner file and delte the ADPTScanner from the DeviceManager then reboot. Upon re-boot the system detects a microtek scanner, and everything works great!

I installed a ScanMaker V310...on the 1st install it caused a system wide failure...in which I had to reboot in safe mode. I eventually reinstalled the Microtek software which included the ScanMaker, ulead iphoto express, and kai. It is working great SO FAR...I haven't used it enough to tell you whether I'm TOTALLY pleased with it YET...but it is working great at the moment. I decided with a parallel port because I was a bit fearful with messing my comp with a SCSI card...so that made my decision easier to make. I use the pass through printer port for my epson stylus 600...my scanner has to be on constantly for the printer to be used. Just wondering for the future...can the "bulb" on my scanner be replaced....and if so...what's the cost at this point...thanks for any info! vivek

I finally got my E6 installed and did the scanner test successfully. I already have an Adaptec AHA 2930 SCSI card on IRQ 10. I first tried to install the 1502AE Adaptec card on IRQ 11. No conflicts were indicated, but the windows installation always hung up on the finish. In the device manager everything looked good, including the proper IRQ. The card was present in the SCSI devices, but when I rebooted the system would hang getting into windows. I had to come up in safe mode and delete the 1502AE entry under device manager SCSI. Then everything would work except the scanner. Finally I took the card out again and changed the IRQ to 12. Then it went through the installation successfully, and the scanner seems to be working.

I used my E6 last night on the BT-948. The gods must be smiling. I did not have a single lockup--everything worked beautifully from an 8.5x13" scan to several 4x6 photos. The scanner has been working solidly on the BT-948 since I last hooked it up. I am now suspecting that either voodoo, card seating, or cable angles may have something to do with previous bouts of intermittent lockups.
The BT-948 is an ultra-scsi card. The scanner shares the bus with an ultra-scsi HD and a SCSI-2 TR-4 tape drive. Internal bus is 3', external 4'. Both ends actively terminated.

Installation of my E6 & supplied SCSI card & supplied terminator was uneventful, couldn't have been easier. Default resources (irq=10 & i/o=140h) set on the card were free on my system and installed perfectly. Supplied software installed from the CD without a hitch. No after install problems. Scanner worked just great from scan #1. On day #3 I did get a message saying that the Monitor was unknown which I fixed by reselecting the monitor in Display Properties. I had not seen this message before installing the scanner so I thought it might be related. On Day#4 I upgraded to ScanWizard 2.42 and I haven't seen that error message since. My system: Dell XPS D300, 64MB. This scanner is the only scsi device. OSR2.1 with all the latest updates installed. It did *not* ask for my Win95 CD during the install as some others have reportedly experienced. Maybe this is because I use OSR2.1, or maybe it's because I have installed all the lastest OSR2.1 updates.

Use the included 1502AE card for both Nikon LS-1000 (6 feet cable) and Microtek E6 (3 feet cable) with no problems. Use Scanwizard V2.35. Did have to force win95 to select IRQ11! Win95 reported IRQ10 being free and insisted on assigning it to SCSI card eventhough it was used by the mwave card in my IBM Aptiva! I am thinking of getting a Diamond Fireport40 for Nikon, Microtek and probably a Ricoh CDRW & would welcome any information on this potential setup.

I have also tested the Microtek 35T+ S/N S738308261 on an other machine with Windows 98 beta with almost the same results. The hue problem is less prominent here. But the previews were often much too dark and the off color problem is the same. Hardware: Informtech 486, 66 Mhz, 32 Mb. Somenobe at Compuserve suggested to leave the scanner on for a couple of hours, I did, but this did not any difference. My 3 year old Pentium 90, Win95 system with an Epson Stylus Color printer (running off LPT1) refused to recognize the E3+ despite any maneuvers: forcing the parallel port to standard vs enhanced mode, turning off Burst mode, slowing down the parallel port, or adding various commands to the simpleSCSI parallel port adapter command line (/N /V /SF=5; /N /E; /N /SF=5 /U) as detailed in EPP.EXE on the Microtek ftp site: ftp://ftp.microtek.com/microtek/pcfiles/. My Device Manager also showed an error with the simpleSCSI parallel port host adapter. Microtek does not have any PC support yet at its web site for the E3+ and their reps have not yet been able to give me any more help. This is a sequel to the previous entry. I talked to Todd H. about my SCSI problems and he suggested using an active terminator on the end of the bus. I bought the "Enhanced Diagnostic Terminator" at the local Computer City. It costs $50 and has a lot of leds that might aid in trouble-shooting problems. After adding it to the end of the bus (in place of the passive terminator that came with the E6) my SCSI problems have disappeared. Thanks Todd!

I attempted to install an E3+ (parallel) on both my Pentium and 486 machines. Bear in mind that these machines are very different. Software installation on my Pentium would not complete properly. System would consistently freeze up during device driver update. After (finally) getting the software installed without exclamations under the Win95 control panel, would get consistent "Timeout Error - -1004" while attempting to scan. Attempting to install the scanner on the 486 generated the VERY SAME PROBLEM! Exchanged scanner for another E3+. Identical symptoms. Blew me away! Was unable to determine the cause of the problem after many hours playing with smplscsi settings, IRQ's, etc., etc. Returned the scanner and regained sanity. One comment: The generally shoddy workmanship of the scanner driver support (spelling errors, poor design, unbelievably horrid documentation, etc.) leads me to suspect that the E3+ was a rush job. This is too bad, because the E3 (NOT the E3+) was a great unit. But, as they say, as soon as something great comes along, they stop making it!

Thursday, March 5, 1998 - 11:45:59 pmOur ScanMaker 35t Plus (ordered from www.insight.com, 1/98) broke down after 2 sessions of 2 hours of usage. First the motor moving the slide carriage malfunctioned, then the lamp went out a few minutes later -- some critical part had failed. After that, the motor would no longer perform as before and the lamp didn't turn on; the ready light also never turned on again. We called Microtek Tech Support and they gave us an RMA number. They received the defective film scanner on 18-Feb-1998, and we received a presumably working product 2-Mar-1998, total 12 day processing time.

Friday, March 6, 1998 - 04:01:15 pmHi world, Hi hodd, Up to yesterday my PC worked fine with an Adaptec 1502 card and Microtek's Scanmaker E6. Then a new SCSI harddisk (IBM DPES 31080) together with an Adaptec AHA-1542CP arrived from the office (they wanted to trash them!). Remove the 1502, installed the 1542CP, terminated the harddisk, installed it, everything was just fine, disk was recognized.
Then I wanted to plug-in the scanner, but hey... the cable didn't fit into the AHA 1542CP. Went to my local computer store, bought a new cable (DSUB 50 HP - Centr. 50 SP says it on the package), plugged it in and ... - the Adaptec timed out during the boot process.
So: Looked around the Internet and found out that I had to terminate the scanner. Unfortunately, the new cable had no terminator.
Went again to the store, bought a 50 pins Centronics, passive inline terminator. Plugged it in between the scanner and the cable. Booted and hey... the scanner was recognized. Me lucky!
Started Windows 95, the scanner was again recognized. Just for sure, installed the newest version of ScanWizard 2.44. Tested the scanner with Microtek's ScannerTest. First impression: Connecting takes longer than before. - Wanted to see what PaintShopPro does...
Selected the 32 bit twain version for aquiring in PaintShopPro. Then tried to acquire a new scan: ScanWizard started. Preview took 26 seconds (hand-stopped!) until the scanner started to scan. Prescan was OK. Then wanted to scan the pic eventually, but after about 200 seconds of waiting for something to happen: nothing happened. Had to terminate PaintShopPro.
This is reproducable! The connecting process with ScannerTest takes much longer. PaintShopPro refuses to scan but prescans delayed but OK.
Any ideas about what is happening here?

Sunday, March 8, 1998 - 07:57:42 pmTrying to use my new E3 Plus has been a disaster. Up most of the last 20 hrs struggling with it (probably would have been up anyway since we have a newborn boy in the house, its his pix I want to scan...) Trying to Use it on a Thinkpad 560 (P 133/ 24M RAM), which has 2 PCMCIA cards, one of which is used to connect an external Panasonic CD-ROM. Got one decent scan out of the package, then the whole thing has crashed continuously. Intially, I could still preview, but scans would produce 1/5 of the image, rest colored streaks. then it stopped even doing that, and freezes at the scan test in Scanwizard. Windows error message usually includes reference to smplscsy. Many times, it freezes the whole laptop. I've reinstalled Scanwizard, tried setting my parallel port to ECP etc. (Though I don't know how to set the channels when I do that, seems to default to DMA 3.) Checked out the crappy & cheap Microtek site. Nothing works! I plan on sending the whole damn unit back, unless someone can suggest a new solution such as one of the undocumented "software switches" I've seen mentioned in some postings. Thanks for your help, and Microtek buyers beware!

Monday, March 9, 1998 - 12:24:16 amAfter tests with at least 15 different cables and 5 different Terminators (aktive and passive scsi-1 and 2) i found some differences in results of previewing. Sometimes it was working. Maybe there are some problems on the bus because i am using 2 ST32550WC Barracuda with SCA-Adapters and a 32-Toshiba CDROM. Additionaly i connect sometimes a DEC DLT4000 Tapedrive. Just for testing i changed the Terminator who is attached on the Scanner (pass-trough terminator) with a SCSII-Sniffer with some funny LED´s on it. (Dont realy know the meaning off all LED`s) and now everything is working without any problems at all. I am not shure if the sniffer is just the right terminator or if it is sorting out some real problems on the bus. Only thing i found is a big difference between Scanning and Previewing. The LED´s are reacting very different. But anyway, now it is working. This SNIFFER-THING is a T210TT which i have bought from EFB-Electronik. The Manufactures-Name could be SCSI-SENSE but i am not shure about it. Last thing i wot to say is that i am glad to get some help through this forum while i got no help from Microtec at all. Someone said: "It´s a great scanner with a realy bad support." sorry, but i have to say thats true. Thanks to Todd who gave me a tipp in the right direction. /Wolfgang

The cables are the ones that came with, and I didn't add a terminator. Only problem was that the software Installer didn't checkmark "CFM-68K Runtime Enabler" in the Extension Sets. So the first change of Sets disabled that Extension, causing crashes. Fixed that with the Mac Extensions Manager.

Tuesday, March 10, 1998 - 12:53:38 amAfter Installation of the SCSI-Sniffer i thought everything is working but is is not. I am realy tired about this Scanner-SW. It seems that it is not possible to change the scan-type from "Millions of colores" to "line" ore "256 Grayscale" without having the same problems as i had before. The scsi-bus hangs and Winnt40 breaks down with the well known message on blue screen "IRQL_NOT LESS OR EQUAL" AIC78xx ect. If i change back everything to 300 dpi and color it works. If i install everything new and scan the first job in B/W it works with B/W until i change to color. So every change i do will cause the scanner-sw to pull down the scsi-bus. I am out of ideas what i can test to figure out what is going on. From Microtec i get no answers at all. Saturday, March 14, 1998 - 09:34:17 amI just recently built a new P300 system with an Asus SC875 PCI UltraWide SCSI card. Internally there is an UltraSCSI Plextor UltraPlex CD-ROM. That setup worked fine, so I decided to try connecting my Microtek E-3. This E-3 was purchased as the "parallel-to-SCSI" version and was being used as such on a previous Cyrix PC. Anyway I took out the parallel-to-SCSI cable and bought a cable with a 50-pin centronics end for the scanner side and a DB68-pin end for the external UW connector on my Asus card. Also I placed Microtek's included terminator on the 50-pin end of the cable. Cable is 6 feet long (I don't plan on adding additional external SCSI devices). Booted up, installed ScanWizard, worked like a charm. No problems at all. Microtek scanner is set to ID #5, UltraPlex is ID #3. This system is actually running Windows 98 RC0, and all devices are being run by the drivers that Win98 installed itself upon installation. None of the drivers included on manufacturer's disks were used. cheers Aaron (aaron@pobox.com)

Tuesday, March 24, 1998 - 07:05:54 pmMy old Scanmaker II was incompatible with NT, I have a Scanmaker E3 Plus which is stated to be NT-compatible and connects through the parallel port, with the printer. I have done all the installation as instructed and the computer cannot detect a scanner in the system. I called Microtek this morning and on their advice downloaded the latest upgraded version of ScanWizard (2.44) and the EPP driver (?) epp263.exe and installed them and still get the same error messages. The scanner test routine tells me: "No parallel port host adapters found. Please ensure the device is powered up and connected properly",  and "No scanner devices connected..." On rebooting the system, I get the message: " At least one service or driver failed during system setup. Use Event Viewer ...etc" The Event Viewer log tells me "The following boot-start or system start drivers failed to load: SMPLSCSI" In Settings, Control Panel, SCSI adapters, the driver is listed as "Microtek SMPLSCSI Driver installed (not started)." The printer works when connected throught the scanner. Parallel port is set to EPP. The Microtek rep said if the new drivers don't solve it, the next thing to check is hardware. Possibly a faulty cable, even a faulty scanner. If none of those things work, he had no other ideas. AARRRRRGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because I only had 1 isa-slot and 1 IRQ left, I feared that I could run into trouble, but everything was installed within half an hour. I'm using the cable that came with the scanner. The only remarks that I have to make is that the scanner is rather noisy and I would like to use the twain-driver without having the popup-screens from the scanwizard. I'm using Papermaster that came with the scanner and this program should be able to use it's own scanner-settings screen, but I get a message saying it can't disable scanwizard's interface. I emailed Microtek Europe and they say it's the software that isn't using the twain driver correctly. I find this rather odd because they include it with their scanner (don't get me wrong on this, I find papermaster terrific).

Probably ignorant faults on my side, because it was the first time I installed a scanner (and SCSI interface card). The card is recognized by win95, but defaults to IRQ 12, which you have to replace with 10, because the Adaptec 1505 is defaulted at 10. Some weird things happened, as the interface card didn't work correctly the first couple of times I installed it. A yellow exclamation mark, but no conflicts whatsoever .. I messed around with the settings for awhile and hard rebooted a couple of times, and every time i would get a different error message. Also, remember to install Scanwizard first before connecting the scanner to the SCSI card (I forgot!). It now works .. and I'm perfectly happy with it. Regards, Lok

Sunday, May 17, 1998 - 01:41:17 amAs a matter of fact my scanner is a Microtek Phantom 330. It is detected as a V310 by the software. I would not say that installation was painless for several reasons:
- first my Windows 95 system crashed during the installation; I will not blame Microtek on that one but may be a combination of Bill and Microtek,
- documentation is far from obvious; installation of the SCSI card was painful since I had about 3 different ways of jumper configuration according to the documentation I received, I had to look at where the tracks were going on the bus connector.
After reloading Windows and sorting that jumper problem, the scanner is working as expected, I have not had much time to use it but so far so good. As a conclusion installation of that type of product should be carried out only by people who have plenty of knowledge about the PC (hardware and software).

I have a V310 scanner. I put this on my machine the day I bought it and was scanning pictures within an hour. A couple of days later my machine went south on me ( I have had problems with it for a long time) I bought a new machine ( AMD K6 233 MMX) and tried to install the software. NO LUCK I keep getting SCAN_32 fatal errors. I have tried to install V2.42 and V2.46 from microteks web site. Again same problems. I have also installed the software on my machine at work with no problems so it appears that it is a software conflict with something that I have on my new machine. I can pull up swiss knife and run it with no problem, but, cannot pull up scanwizard.
Anybody out there ran into this problem??

Thursday, July 2, 1998 - 05:35:15 amA have been trying for some time now to get my 35T+ scanner to work reliably. When I first switch on everthing is fine and the resulting scans are very good. However after approximately 10 scans I encounter problems with errors in colour balance. These seem random at first, the odd pink scan or lime green tint. As I take further scans other problems arise the motor driving the slide carrier seems to falter or chatter. At this point the problems seem to compound until the computer locks up. I have used the scanner on a Quadra 800 with 64m of memory with Scanwizard software v.3.0.7 which came with the scanner.I have also tryed using it on a G3 Mac with 64m of memory with the original scanwizard software but also with downloads of v.PPC 3.1.2 and v PPC 3.2.0. The problem still occurs. I am using the scanwizard software as a plug in to Photoshop. The only external device on the SCSI is a SyQuest EZ Drive.
Can anyone suggest possible corrective measures to overcome this problem before I toss this scanner into the Thames.

Wednesday, July 8, 1998 - 08:40:47 amI tried a Buslogic BT-946C. I understand it is a BT-948 predecessor. It is a PCI Fast SCSI2 card. It's maximum transfer rate is 10MB/sec as opposed to 20MB/sec for the BT-948. It also doesn't have the BIOS to boot a CD-ROM. I became interested in the Buslogic BT-946C, because Wayne Fulton on his http://www.cyberramp.net/~fulton/scans.html page says he used the BT-946C to connect a Microtek E3 scanner and he didn't have any problems. I connected the BT-946C to my E6 scanner using the same 4 foot cable I had used unsuccessfully with my Adaptec 2930 card. I used the same Passive Passthru terminator that came with the Microtek E6. Over the last two days I have done more than my usual amount of scanning of various size pictures and documents. With the BT-946C I have not had a single hang or timeout. That's even a better record than I had with the Adaptec AVA 1502AE, which would hang occasionally during a scan. So far the scanner is all I have on the BT-946C. I have an IDE Harddrive and have the CD-ROMS on the Adaptec 2930. I can boot a CD-ROM on the 2930. Since the BT-946C is a PCI card, the mouse is also free during the scan, although it doesn't seem to scan any faster. I tried starting some other things during a scan. Still no hangs or timeouts. The BT-946C cost $90, which may be a little expensive to prevent a few hangups and let the mouse move, but I do have a free ISA slot now, and I have two SCSI controllers in my system.

I use address 140 and IRQ 11. I have a Zip Drive, (external, parallel) which is host#0, the AVA is host#1, both show up in scsi interrogator as being device #7, In DOS, the zip drive is #6 and the scanner is #5.

Wednesday, September 30, 1998 - 02:48:52 amPhantom 336cx. Why can't I find any information on this? Anyway, I have tried to set this up on the office NT4 server with no luck. This was using an EPP driver, which co-exists with an HP Laserjet 6 printer. The SMPLSCSI driver refused to load at startup. I have used the latest ScanWizard software from the microtek website.
My second attempt was to try to get this to work on my Mac. Internal SCSI port has same 25 pin connector. Found ScanWizard software, which comes with all the MicroTek drivers except those for Phantom. Why is there no information on this scanner?
Phantom now lives in the dark recesses under my desk and will do so until someone can tell me how to get it going.

Friday, October 16, 1998 - 02:44:22 amV600- After about 15 crashes I was able to configure the scanner. It is the worst bundled software ever used(crashes, sloooow, corrupt). After 6 installs scanwizard seemed to work, the OCR software was not complete(missing or corrupt diver). The program still locks up after scanning into Photoshop 5.0(Ulead iPhoto Express would not install),it also added cd setup/exe to Win ini and to the desktop. The hardware is fine, the software and bundling both suck! SwissKnife works fine. I can't save a scanned image, it locks up after dropping image into editor.

Monday, October 26, 1998 - 08:01:53 amI can not use my new ScanMaker 4. The problem seems to be related to the SCSI card (1502AE) which is not recognized by WinNT4... The Motherboard BIOS does detect the card but not the OS... I have the IRQ 11 free (but not the 10th and 12th), but... I installed the driver in Control Panel/SCSI adapters/Drivers but nothing new appears in /Device... After booting, I get this error message "...driver failed during system startup..." and I find in Adminstrative Tools/Event Viewer that the driver is Sparrow with no description... I need help.

Using with IMPOS/2 and it works perfectly. Haven't been successful with Win-OS/2 yet, TWAIN problem it tells me??? Using supplied terminator though system works without it, used trying to track down problem and just left it on. Using supplied cable. Great scanner. I Ctrl-Alt-Del to launch Task Manager and ScanWizard starts (scares it sort of) 2) reflective scan works good then switch to transparency mode and the preview is all rainbow banded from R to G to B starting at one side of the scan array to 1/2 or 3/4 accross the image. Power scanner off and on and re-launching Scanwizard fixes it. Microtek said manually delete some files and re-load Scanwizard. No difference.

Saturday, December 5, 1998 - 10:50:50 pmI had my E3 working on an older machine 486 with Win 95, first build and it worked fine--used all the defaults and everything was smooth as silk. Problem started when I got a new Pentium II Win 95 build B. It appeared that IRQ 9 was free so I changed the jumpers but everytime I try and boot, Win 95 hangs and I must reboot to safe mode to remove the driver. Seems like a lot of my IRQs are used up by "IRQ holder for PCI steering" does anybody know why-I have 3 of the damn things. I didn't try the other setting as IRQs 11, 10 and 12 are already being used and cannot be reassigned.

Sunday, December 13, 1998 - 05:14:44 pmI just purchased my scanner yesterday and after some fidding, I've gotten it to work fairly well. (V310 via Parallel port on a 486 running Win95)
I'm having one BIG PROBLEM. Everything I scan has very bright red, green, and/or blue specks in it. This includes scanning nothing at all. The image of the scanner bed has this glitter also. A picture of my niece looks like someone shot the poor kid witha Christmas Glitter-Gun!! Resolution only changes the size of the glitter. Contrast, color enhancement, etc...has no effect.
Any suggestions? I'm periodically having the problem where the first portion of the picture scans fine but the rest is just a streak of color.

Friday, January 15, 1999 - 10:16:41 amX6EL. Scanner sort of works. "Millions of Colors" mode is flawless. Mode changes hang the system with a timeout in ScanLizard (1004), thereafter the scanner is not found on the SCSI bus. Followed Microtek's requirements for SCSI BIOS settings. Changed from ScanLizard 2.48 to 2.52 following their instructions. Same problem.
Funny thing: once the system decides the scanner ain't there, cycling power *on the scanner* is needed to enable it - it otherwise isn't found even when the NT box is rebooted.

The scanner is using SCSI ID: 6, controller is ID: 7. I've tried it with and without a Toshiba internal CD-ROM attached at ID: 0. I've set everything in the SCSISelect for ID: 6 to Microtek's suggested settings. The cable is the original with a 1 meter cable attached to it that converts from the 25 pin connector on the original cable to the SCSI2 connecter on the 2940. The terminator is the original inline. This setup worked on the first PC with the older 2940.
I've seen diagnostic terminators mentioned here so I may try that. The total cable length is about 2 meters so that really shouldn't cause a problem.
Feel free to email any suggestions :-)

Sunday, April 25, 1999 - 07:53:30 amFirst time installation under Win95/OSR2 worked fine with beautiful scans. After reboot the scanner was no longer seen with an error message of "No Host Adapters Found". Since then I have tried everything I can think of including setting Parallel Port in BIOS to ECP/EPP, ECP and EPP/SPP (I think it was set to just SPP the first time I installed it). Also tried all permutations of boot sequences (scanner->printer->PC, scanner->PC->printer, etc.) Also tried all possible options without printer attached (using an Epson Color Stylus600). Tried complete reformat and reinstall of Win95 to no avail. Have since "graded" to Win98 (still not sure whether the use of the prefix "up-" is warranted). This didn't resolve anything either. Tried using Microtek Support Web Site's suggested Win98 driver switches (you know, the "/n /v /sf=30" options) but this didn't work either. Began to suspect the cable. Took cable back to Micro Center but they don't carry replacements (!). I asked them if they could test my cable while I was there so I could rule it out. First two sales reps said I'd have to contact Microtek because Micro Center doesn't have any scanners to test it with (!?). Third rep hooked me up with a comparable cable and Centronics->DB25 adapter so I could test the "bad cable" theory. Same results. Seems to me like everyone involved from the manufacturer to the retailer is unable to effectively support this device. By the way I noticed that Micro Center no longer carries any Microtek Parallel Port scanners and is only offering USB models and a couple that use SCSI cards. One of the new Microtek USB models was only $49 after a $30 mail-in rebate (my V310 was $79 with no rebates offered just a few months ago). What's the old saying?: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." I think I'll be trying one of the UMAX models next, thanks to Microtek's poor online support. This whole experience has been like trying to get beta software working correctly (in other words, definitely NOT A PLUG-N-PLAY EXPERIENCE). Are you listening Microtek? Thursday, August 19, 1999 - 04:10:35 pmAll worked except for the Preview - attempting to preview a scan would cause a blue-screen error in the aic78xx.sys driver. Microtek gave me the wonderful suggestion that I should enlarge the preview window until it filled the screen, and then hit the "Preview" button. To my intense surprise, this gets rid of the blue screen error. Microtek naturally say this is a "problem in NT itself", but they are "working on it".
Among Microtek's other amusing assertions: "Don't use an adapter - use a single cable" "It works better at a higher SCSI ID - say, 6, instead of 2." "We can't put you on a mailing list to receive information about new updates."

I've been using an E6 and a BT-948 for a while, and had few problems. Yeh, Microtek's software sucks. Thing I hate is how the Microtek twain driver (in Photoshop 4) has to be reloaded for and killed after every scan. Hey Microtek: heard of multitasking?
I keep the scanner off mostly, only turn it on when going to do scans. How to reconnect without reboot: Right click on 'My Computer' (Bill's Computer?) --> Properties. Device manager tab --> Computer. Select 'View Devices by connection. 'Refresh' (takes several seconds) If new dev not visible, expand 'SCSI card'. As for the stupid toy SCSI card that came with the scanner: bin it. No internal SCSI header, indeed! Would have helped if Microtek had documented what the pinouts of the D connector on the back of the E6 was. OK, so eventually I found out it was a Mac SCSI 'standard', but not having a Mac... I had to wire up a cable, just to loop the SCSI on to the external hard disks box.
I found this site while searching for info on why my Philips SCSI CD burner (CDD2000) has just stopped working (in Win95 only - still OK in DOS and Win 3.1 !!!???) Sigh. Computers. I really didn't want to spend Christmas battling with the dammed things.

Since then there is a variable length pause between pressing the PREVIEW button and when the scan starts. If I watch the the Ready light closely it flashs very faintly every two seconds, as if the card is polling the scanner, but the scanner cannot read the request. I think this is a termination problem, but since I have not solved it yet I do not know. I will post more IF I solve it.
Once the scan starts it does fine. Once I have a scan started I can repeatly click the Preview button and the scanner will continue to complete all the scans, but once it stops, I have to wait the delay before another scan will start.
There is nothing but the scanner on the controller card.

Saturday, June 15, 2002 - 09:12:34 amHi...ever since installation of a new scanner ( with twain drivers) ALL of my PS [rograms freeze on intializing...PS7 even yeilds a twain re-install recommendation error. Please reply if you have hyad this problem or have an idea.. But do know that i have 1. deleted and re-installed PS with and without the scanner and drivers...(using registry crawler to clean out any traces0 2. have re- named all the twin twinker files. Have re-installed Windows OS OVER the old version. 3. have spoken to Canoscan tech support ot make certain I have no remaining dlls or anything... 4. have scoured Adobe for twain/thunker window problems and they only refer to probs IMPORTING images into PS from a twin scanner (I assume PS can initialize for this). 5. I have removed all prOGRAMS associated with the scanner (omnipro and photoscan) both of which work FINE with the scanned images...although PS was an option to import scanned stuff into it never worked..It froze. Last bit of info I have is each time I try to run PS 4 files are thrown into the Win temp dir.. 3 .mtx twain files and a twain log that basically says it cann't find the twunker window??!! I had a TWAIN_32 folder in Windows that only have one version of the twain driver...did i mention that I tried the latest canon driver als well...? and the Canoscan exe stuff. That folder is now deleted, (It was recommended by canon) as it will recreate when another twain scnner or camera is installed. I don't know what else to do aside from re-installing to another os ALTOGETHER or putting PS on another 'pter altogether...oh, yeah I don't HAVE another computer...:0D. I am using Me right now...and tho it has a bad rep I don't mind it. I don't want to have to burn 20 gb of info to disc so i can reinstall the os. O yeah, one last thing... ALL versions of PS: 5.5-7 worked FINE before the scanner was installed...and there have been no other software installations or hardware installed that it could be. Help!! I MISS Photoshop!!! Scuba22 aka Michele followup: well, guys..I sooooo appreciate the help... I have tried everything mentioned including re-installing PS wothout any trace of TWAIn or the Scanner software. (including image programs installed with it). I also did dare :-) to clean the registry of any and everything scanner, twain, twunk AND photoshop related rebooted and re-installed everything. As far as Quarterdeck Clean sweep...I do run Norton clean sweep and have read that rec. on the Adobe site, so I disabled that too as a test: No change. The error log that gets thrown into the temp dir (along with 2 0r 3 .mtx files) reads as follows: TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk ::AppInitialize - Reset Log TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk ::OpenServer - Starting Thunker TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk ::CloseServer - Why Can't We Find The Thunker Window? TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - DSM --DsmEntryDiagExit (RC = 0, CC = 0) TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTWTRACE--Adobe Photoshop(49) to NULL: TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTWTRACE--CONTROL, IDENTITY, GETFIRST the only thing i ahve not tried...is the re-insatll of PF only the EXE files as Caligula's Adobe rec states. It seems whether the scanner is on or not PS is messed up now. I spoke to Canon tech support who referred me BACK to ADOBE...who charges for support ??!! So, I'm still trying. The bummer is: I have so much I want to do... Michele

This really anoys me, because my pc isn't that fast, and it takes a while to reboot. I've tried several versions of microtek's drivers. They worked, but as I turn off my scanner and switch it back on, I have to reboot. Speaking of timekilling :)!!! Can anyone tell me, why I have to reboot, and how I can fix this. Extra information: there's a yellow ! on my smplscsi port at my device manager, but also windows has installed a SCSI RAID controller, wich I don't have (I think)

Sunday, July 14, 2002 - 04:45:49 amI tried to use my Scanmaker E6 with almost every Operatin System for PC and a lot of Adaptec card and I reached the following conclusions: - Windows 98: It works fine with PCI Adaptec 2940, 2910c, 2940U2W (connected to the SE port) and the integrated Adaptec 2940U2W (connected to the SE port) of my Asus P2B-DS mainboard. It works with ISA Adaptec 1502 and 1505 but during scanning I can't use the mouse or doing anything else! It does not work well with Adaptec 1540 and 1542: after pressing the scanning command the software wait from 25 to 60 seconds before starting scanning. - Windows 2000: Same behaviour as in Windows 98. The only difference is when I use Adaptec 1540 and 1542. With Adaptec 1540 and 1542 the scanning software does not work! - OS/2: I used the E6 even under OS/2 Warp 4.0 with a software called ImpOS/2 v2.1 and under this operating system the scanner works well with every Adaptec card, apart when using 1502 and 1505 which cause the above mentioned useless mouse problem!!! Great O.S. OS/2 is !!! :-) - Linux (Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake): Same as under OS/2. Even Linux shows its superiority over Windooze systems. In conclusion: I suggest NOT to use this scanner with 1542 and 1540 Adaptec ISA cards under Windows since it is not usable. I suggest NOT to use the 1502 and 1505 Adaptec ISA cards since they are PIO mode and don't support bus mastering and this results in NO multitasking when you are scanning. I also suggest to use a dedicated PCI card for this scanner with just the scanner attached if it is possible, because during scanning all the performances of the SCSI chain fall down making impossible using any other SCSI peripherial with good performances. I think this problem is due because this scanner does not support the Connect/Disconnect SCSI command. I really tested this scanner very well and I think my solution is now the best: I use the scanner connected alone to my Asus P2B-DS integrated SCSI controller and I use another Adaptec 29160 SCSI card for all my other SCSI peripherials (Hard Disks, CD/DVD ROM and CD burner).

Wednesday, August 14, 2002 - 06:38:40 pmWhen I finally scrapped my old P75 with Win95 and upgraded to a P4 1.7GHz with WinME, there of course was no ISA slot in the new machine. I found a used Adaptec AHA-2940 S76, got a new 6 foot cable (50HD to 50 Centronics). After fiddling with the settings in SCSISelect I finally got the computer to recognize the controller, but no such luck with the scanner. I have tried suggestions from Microtek's site, from Adaptec's site, but nothing yet. I have set the sync transfer rate to 5 (lowest setting), initiate sync negotiation to "no", Enable disconnection to "no". I have a terminator on the cable. Sometimes the computer locks up on bootup, sometimes it doesn't. BIOS is version 1.21, controller driver is the one with Windows, I downloaded the most recent Scanwizard from Microtek's site. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thursday, October 24, 2002 - 02:34:24 pm* * * * * EVERYONE WHO HAS PROBLEMS PLEASE READ THIS * * * * * I have had many emails sent to me directly asking if I had found any solutions with regards to the problem I posted here, in the end I did solve the problem, although it wasn't one of the best fixes. I have asked politely, and nicely, everyone who I have sent the information to, to post what I sent them here, so that everyone else could share in it, but no one has - so I'll do it myself. Please note that I am not able to offer any further help or assistance regarding this product, and as a result I will not be answering further emails. Sorry. Here's what I forwarded to each person that emailed me : < BEGINS > I had no luck at all from MicroTek - they replied to my email telling me that the ScanSuite software did not support Windows 2000 and was for Windows 98 only....they were wrong...the ScanSuite software did work with Windows 2000. I got around the whole problem in the end without actually noticing at first. When I was trying to install it all, I could get the 'preview' thing to work, a small black window with a negative of the item I was scanning would appear - so clearly a signal was being received. I then happened to notice a drop down menu within ScanSuite which you could choose 32bit or 'not' 32bit - I chose 32bit and it would then scan directly into ScanSuite. ScanSuite remember my setting and therefore this only needing changing the once. I then tried Word 2000 - under the insert picture thing I had a similar drop down, again I chose 32bit and it worked fine - the setting did not remain though and needed setting each time I wanted to scan something directly into the application - not a large problem - just a little annoying. So, the scanner did work with windows 2000 - even though MicroTek did not/ will not offer any decent support for the product on that OS. Therefore I'd suggest trying the above, and then not ever using MicroTek again - for anything... Also - I've lost the URL to the site I asked my question on - if you can send it - I will post this information there, as I've had a couple of requests now :) < ENDS > Also, I had an email from someone saying that the drivers (2.5.5??) apparantly solved the problems for this guy using Windows 2000 - might be worth a look.

Thursday, January 9, 2003 - 02:29:28 amDear all, This is not really a SCSI-problem, but I'll try to post my question to this site anyway. Problem Description: -------------------- I want to add an additional 40GB IDE HDD to my ASUS P2L97 AGP Motherboard that supports 'only' HDD drives up to 32GB. I believe that I have to upgrade my BIOS. In the BIOS upgrade procedure it states that I shall: - make a DOS boot-disk (a:\) - copy PFLASH.EXE to my a:\ - copy the new BIOS SW to a:\ I have the following problems: 1. When running NT40, how do I make a DOS boot disk? (The boot disk(s) that I currently have (made by winnt32.exe /ox) have no space for any additional SW, and I can not see that I can boot to DOS-prompt from these) 2. I can not download the correct BIOS SW from ASUS homepage, I only find invalid links here.... Conclusion: ----------- Can anyone provide me with the correct description for how to upgrade my BIOS to support a 40GB HDD, and at the same time provide me with PFLASH.EXE and the BIOS SW ? Thanks. Regards, Eldor

Tuesday, Febraury 4, 2003 - 04:53:50 amWe have a 9600XL scanner with the transparency media adaptor. This has been working fine scanning X-rays etc as well as standard non-transparent items. All of a sudden the scanner returns a 'Code 1004- Scanner time out' error message every time I try to use transparencies. It works perfectly well doing everything else as before. The error did come up intermitently, but now it comes up everytime. I have reinstalled the driver, changed all the cables to no avail. What is going on? This is quite urgent as I work at a college where students need it for their projects.
It is connected to a Pentium 3 Windows 2000 machine and is running with the original software that came with a scanner. The scanner test works but comes up with an 'unidentified error' when I test the transparency adaptor. Microtek just replied with their standard blurb about reinstalling the drivers. Is my transparency adaptor knackered?

Wednesday, Febraury 5, 2003 - 11:55:14 pmOriginally came with Scanwizard 2.31 on CD-ROM and worked OK, but only in 16-bit mode. Had to use the DOS type ASPI driver.
Tried to update to later versions 32-bit Scanwizard but none would recognize the scanner. Windows 98 ASPI interface was working with the SCSI CD-ROM, CD-RW and ZIP-100 on the same bus.
Tried the ASPI32 update that was linked from: http://support.microtek.com/~admin/pcftp.html and this solved the problem. E6 with TMA works fine now in 32-bit mode with Scanwizard 2.54.

Tuesday, Febraury 18, 2003 - 05:35:29 pmI tried installing my E6 to a computer using Win 2000. The E6 came with a Chinese built SCSI card, Short cable not over 2 ft. in length. I set the jumpers on the card for IRQ 10, which was available on the computer. The computer will not recognize the scanner or the SCSI card. I spent a whole day trying different settings on the card and the computer with zero results.

Wednesday, Febraury 19, 2003 - 08:43:03 amYesterday nothing worked. Today I found the key, that is, I found the name and model of the SCSI card, also found(stumbled upon) it listed in the Win 2000 Hardware System Add Ins, and then the computer automatically loaded the drivers for the Adaptect 1502AE card which came with the scanner. I forced the IRQ - 10 and 140H, which presented no conflicts with other devices. I opened my Paperport program, punched the twain button and WOW, up came the name of the Microtek E6 and from there I proceded to scan a couple of color test documents. I was very satisfied with the results. Even a blind hog finds an acorn once in a while!

Saturday, March 1, 2003 - 04:38:09 pmI have found no way to get the scanner to communicate with the computer. I've tried downloads from both Microtek and Adaptec and no luck. Microtek support is nonexistant. At least I've learned to never buy anything from Microtek. I've tried 2 different computers (one a clean hard drive/new Win install). Same thing.

Friday, April 4, 2003 - 08:41:37 amSlimScan C3 EPP in Windows XP/2K: Set parallel port to EPP or EPP+ECP in BIOS. Make sure you have Win2k/XP Service Packs and/or compatibility updates from Windows Update installed. CRITICAL! Use POWER UP SEQUENCE as per v2.60 Instruction Guide. Install ONLY ScanWizard v2.60 drivers at http://support.microtek.com/~admin/otherproducts.html . DO NOT install ANY other Microtek ScanWizard or ScanSuite software! Plus, their auto uninstall can corrupt Windows TWAIN support for that device! Install v2.60 driver. REBOOT. Windows detects. If wizard launches, select options to choose drivers from list. Choose Microtek device added by v2.60 install. Finish wizard. Reboot if asked. Windows replaces bad Microtek SimpleSCSI Miniport Drivers with SCSI Raid Host Controller. Disable Microtek device with yellow warning that is left in Device Manager. Make sure alternate software you install is WinXP/2K compatible. Preview/scan is slower but works with TWAIN compliant apps like MS Photo Editor or MS Document Scanning (included in Word/Office/Works Suite), IrfanView (Freeware has copy/fax from scanner feature), SimpleOCR (freeware), MS PictureIt!, Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, Corel PhotoPaint, Caere Omnipage, Ulead PhotoImpact, etc. NOTE: Avoice Caere PaperPort; is problematic in Win2K/XP!
